Hi,

I want to provision out MQ explorer to a user community such that it automatically starts up connected to a set of Qmgrs, say based off a channel table. Is this possible and if so, how? thanks

Try this, or send out the XML itself.

MO71 is much better for this. Also easier to install - just copy a few files.

You can detune the features (should you wish to) with the authority settings file, you can supply the configuration file for the QMs, you can even start pre-defined dialogs.

For example on launching MO71, it could automatically show a list of error queues (e.g. queues with ERROR in their name) over any number of queue managers, highlight the queues with messages in them, sort them by queue depth - all in a single window, and auto-refresh this display every minute.

MO71 has truly amazing features, if you take the time to get to know them.

Don't use MO71 unless your users are already trained on MO71.

It may be powerful and useful and easier to install - or it may not - but it's also not nearly as straight forward to use as MQExplorer.

I have always found it difficult to figure out how to do what I want with it, without having to read the documentation.

In the same way it's possible to provide read only access via MQExplorer

Training? Not really needed if you de-tune MO71 using the AUT file to remove unneeded options from the menus.

Read only access is best provided by using standard MQ OAM access control lists, however MO71 (optionally) even works as a web server, offering access to MQ information via a browser - and this is deliberately only a read-only interface.

You will need to host a MO71 instance on a windows box to provide this web browser service for your users to access. So look at the http server features in the MO71 manual.

So with a browser interface - there is nothing to install for the users!

I like the web browser interface idea, but how would I be able to detect which user is requesting access and provide only his/her qmgr list? Is the web view able to authenticate users, say using ldap or active directory? sorry to be asking questions without readig the doc first

I don't use this feature. I just know it exists. But how many different sets of qmgrs are you looking at having?

You can run more than one copy of MO71 at the same time and give them different http ports. So you could set them up with different configuration files.

You can also pass the QMGR name on the browser URL, so you could set up web pages with various pre-set links on them.

At this point I suggest you fire it up on your PC and try it (and read the manual). Looks like a powerful and fairly customisable feature (e.g. you can add your own HTML to make it look prettier).

Looks like you can set up multiple HTML templates so that to provide different lists of QMs via the MO71 browser interface would be simple enough (and then just give different URLs to the users).

I don't believe that it can deliver different content based on the incoming userid. But read chapter 13 of the MO71 manual.

Do i need to have an MQ Client installed for it to connect in client mode or does it come bundled with one?

can I start it up from command line to start up connected to just 1 Queue Manager (as against a set of QM's in a file). I see the list of options in the arguments to the executable, but something like the below dosent seem to work:

Code:

mqmonntp.exe -m WMQ_TEST -l -c SYSTEM.DEF.SVRCONN  -h test.domain.com(port)

Wellll

Regardless, again, MQ Explorer includes an integrated client.

And if you're really looking to provide a large set of users with a web-based tool for managing or viewing portions of your MQ infrastructure or data about it, you really should be looking at a full and professional MQ monitoring solution. Most of these come with some kind of web tooling that should be configurable to provide a per-user customized experience.

Just set up MO71 the way you want, the config is saved in MQMON.CFG.

It's normally started without any options and used against multiple queue managers. You need to "add location" to start defining where these QMs are in the usual MQ client way (QM name, host, port, channel). Or just tick the client box and use the CCDT.

Of course, install a standard MQ client first. MO71 is written in C and needs the MQI libraries to work. It's a lot faster than the Java based explorer.

You know, every time I use MQ explorer - I hate the way it sits there flickering the mouse pointer for 30 seconds each time I do anything. Is Java still so slow and bloated after all this time, Jeez....!
