Dose anyone have idea what's the relationship between kernel and number of QM on a single box?
Do I need to multiply the following based on number of QMs:
kernel.msgmni = 1024
kernel.shmmni = 4096
kernel.shmall = 2097152
kernel.sem = 500 256000 250 1024
Any performence advantages?
What are the max for each item?

Here is the link which gives the details about the kernel parameters as you have given (which are default) and it also gives the state you should be changing those parameters in case of high load.
Max Processes and Max Open files are the cases.
I do not find the manual where its written that one server should be having only finite 'n' no. of qmgrs defined on it. Actually it also depends on the configuration/hardware on the servers/memory/disk space etc.

Every Qmgr and its related objects occupy some space on the disk, even at the run time of those, they share memory pages and other resources of that system.
for ex: If the no. of threads are too high to be handled by mqm user then *you/systemAdmin* need to decide to alter its value accordingly.
In the Infocenter I do not see where they have mentioned directly proportional relationship between no.of qmgrs and kernel parameters & its values.
for ex: as a prereq. on aix box, we set 'file descriptor' and 'system resources limits' to certain values before installation of mq server code as per the mq installation guide from ibm.

May be, with more info. on this, someone will surely assist you here.

The recommended kernel parameter settings for MQ are really just a guideline for the minimums required for MQ to function reliably in typical usage scenarios. MQ may work fine with lower values, although too low and it will fail. The minimum values may work fine with more than one queue manager on the host. The kernel resources are also utilized by other processes on the box, so if you run a heavy weight database or application server, the values will need to be somewhat higher.

Not so much gray. Multiple qmgrs may work fine with out-of-the-box values. The real issue is what workload the multiple qmgrs will be responding to.
One, two, five, qmgrs with little or no work to do will take few resources; while one busy qmgr may take all available resources.
So, lacking any definitive workload expectations, there is no way we can speculate on this.
FWIW, I've had 8 cluster/networked qmgrs running (with very little to do) in two vmware Windows images (4 qmgrs each), on my aging, under-the-desk pc with 4GB RAM, AMD dual-core, 2.3Ghz processors, and 1.5T disk space. Is this a production configuration? Not likely. But is sufficient for testing, playing and app development. _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.
