Does the use of Xpath incur an overhead compared to other techniques for accessing elements within XML?

For example, the following code makes things a lot easier from a coding perspective:

el=(List <MbElement>)oMsg.evaluateXPath(createXPath("/ns:Header/ns:Branch1/ns:Branch2"));

Is it more efficient from a processing perspective than looping through the XML tree?
