Well if you are truly going to mirror production you should install 5.1, however, you need to upgrade all environments asap unless you really like running out of support software in your production environment. |

On the one hand you should install v5.1 on your test system. There are many, many changes between v5.1 and v6.0 and to do otherwise is to expose yourself to a serious risk an application developed on v6 will work differently or not at all.
But on the other hand, you're running v5.1 in production so risk doesn't bother you. This version on Solaris is so old it's not funny and any install you do will need to be from the media you have as you're unlikely to be able to obtain v5.1 from any other source.
If the "new" test server really is a new server, and not a recycled one from your existing estate you may also hit hardware / OS compatibility issues with such an old version.
Running v5.1 in prod? Gosh. The global downturn must be viewed as a minor issue by your management..... _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

the understanding between me and application people is they will upgrade to MQ 6.0 in production after i install 6.0 in new system test and if their application everything works fine. since we are in process of upgrade to 6.0 on all other servers? |

A sensible plan. Years too late but sensible.
But since your original post stated:

This new set up won't mirror your production set up. It will mirror what you intend your production set up to be, which is a different thing completely.
It also leads me to wonder why you asked the question in the first place, if this is the case. If this new server is supposed to be used for system testing of an application on v6 to determine if v6 is "safe" to be used in production, why did you ask if you should install v5.1??
What are we missing here? _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

Application people gave me two options first one is install the 5.1 as production and second choice would be to go to version 6.0 and they can test it with the assumption that they would upgrade production if everything works as expected.? what is the best option now for me? |

Well that's a question only you can answer.
Points to consider include:
The v5.1 is seriously out of support. You will have trouble getting any problems fixed, and could have compatibility issues with hardware.
If you're as new as you say, how will you address any application problems you encounter if it doesn't work as expected with v6; in terms of set up or their application.
It's certainly best to move to v6 rather than v5.1
The application will pass the testing on v5.1
Still remains your choice. Only you know your circumstances. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

Install 5.1 on the test system, verify it works the same as the 5.1 prod system, then test the upgrade from 5.1 to 6.0 on the new test server, so you know what you are doing when you upgrade the prod server from 5.1 to 6.0. _________________ Peter Potkay
