You're right - you are unable to read them. They're an IBM proprietory format and there is no good reason to look at them in a properly working system. Indeed, opening them under Windoze can confuse the queue manager.

You may have noticed some ads on this site for log reading tools. These are more for specialist uses than just browsing the logs out of interest. I repeat there is no reason why you would normally want to look in these files; you should leave the queue manager to handle them.
Also do not confuse these with the queue manager logs in which errors are reported. These are in a different folder (errors??), are plain text and potentially helpful. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

It is unfortuante that WMQ uses the term logs to refer to two different qmgr functions.
One is the error logs, with filenames AMQERR01.LOG, AMQERR02.LOG,... These log files contain usefull information about normal qmgr operation, and errors encountered during qmgr operation. Look for these logs in folders (subdirectories) called 'errors'. You may read these at any time with Notepad or vi or whatever.
The other logs, with filenames like S0000056.LOG, are for qmgr consistency, preserving persistent messages, qmgr restart. This is where the qmgr captures images of persistent messages, object attribute changes, and the like. These logs are written in a proprietary format. A utility (dmpmqlog) is provided to print these.
Take a look at the WMQ System Administration manual, in a section on Recovery and Restart. _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.

If only the folks at the WMQ factory had distinguished the error logs by naming them AMQERR01.ERR, and called them anything other than logs.
Let confusion reign. _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.
