Add a trace node on the failure terminal. Trace both $Root and $ExceptionList. This will tell you more...My personal guess: a parsing exception...

Can you tell us what the error you get when the message fails? Also are you completing the unit of work when in debug? If the message is failing in parsing you will see it only when it serializes i.e. fter you put in on the queue (unless you are forcing serialization during the flow)

I've seen this happen once before.
My guess is that there is some "extra" data, that doesn't match the definition, past the point that you reference in ESQL. The "parse on demand" appears to work a little differently in Debug.
