Hi all,
I am going to install Websphere MQ 6.0 on Windows 2000 server SP4.
I already have MQ Series 5.3 on this server and there are couple of queue managers running.

Now, if i want to upgrade the MQ Series from 5.3 to 6.0, do i have to delete the MQ 5.3 first and then install 6.0 (or) is it fine if i install MQ 6.0 over MQ 5.3... Please advise and also i appreciate if you can throw some light on what happens to the queue manager data if i prefer to delete the MQ Series 5.3 and install MQ 6.0...

I highly appreciate your earliest reply on this regard.
Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi

I believe we have already discussed this issue many times in this forum
Search it.

anyway repeating once again

1. Un-install the mq 5.3 and its CSDs. (it wont remove your qmgr details and its respective directories)
2. Install MQ 6 and its refresh pack
3. start the queue manager using strmqm -c <qmgr name>

Note: you can't install MQ 6 above of MQ 5.3, please go through the migration doc also.

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate that.
But i have a question here, what if i want to save the queue manager and it's queues and channels etc., You asked me to delete MQ 5.3, so if i do that, will my queues, channels and the queue manager details itself be saved? If not, please tell me the route to follow so that i won't lose any data when migrating to MQ 6.0.

Thank you and i appreciate your reply to the above question.

Gaya3, I went through the IBM site yesterday before upgrading to MQ 6.0 on my windows server. Please find the link below in which it states the following:

"WebSphere MQ V5.3 and V6 cannot coexist. When installing WebSphere MQ V6.0, it will overwrite any existing older version of WebSphere MQ."

reference site for the statement above:
http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/websphere/techjournal/contact admin/contact admin.html

Because of the fear that i might lose all the queue manager data, having seen the above site, i thought not to uninstall MQ 5.3 but instead install MQ 6.0 over on top of it. And, surprisingly everything is working fine, i am able to display queues, channels and start the queue manager etc., and also i was able to display the MQ version succesfully. Will this be of any problem in the future? What would you advise? I really appreciate your reply on this regard.
Thank you well in advance.

For saving your MQ objects and authorities you can use the support pack MS03 saveqmgr and maybe amqoamd (for saving auths in v5.3)

Uninstalling MQ will no delete the MQ objects.

For upgrade an uninstall is not required but some people prefer it.

Thank you Vennela and Gaya3 for suggesting some good thoughts on MQ installation. I am also trying to apply RP2.0 over MQ 6.0 on Windowss 2000 server.

I stopped all MQ processes and even issued the command amqicsdn MQPINUSEOK=1 to avoid AMQ4757 error. No matter what I do (i even restarted the server, issued all the commands as per IBM suggestion) I still get the error "IBM Websphere MQ files are in use. Stop activity and retry (AMQ4757)".

Please advise on this issue. It is really urgent for me to install the RP2.0 and i am not able to apply it for the reasons i stated above. Please advise and I really appreciate your reply on this regard.
