I have a cluster in production with 4 qm's, call them A,B,C,D with the following roles:
A - full repos, B - partial repos
C - full repos, D - partial
A & B are being replaced (new servers) with same channel names, queues; only conname for A & B will change.
I'm looking for the best way to make this switch within a maintenance window. My current plan:
Shut down A & B (old)
On C & D:
1. Suspend qmgr, alter sdr & rcvr channels out of cluster, stop & delete them, end the repository manager process.
2. Then clear cluster.comand.queue, cluster.repository.queue and shutdown qmgr and run amqiclen -x to clear memory.
Start new A & B (which will be the same except for qmid and connames)
Redefine cluster channels on C & D.
Should run OK? It did in test.
My concern is to get the least nr of steps to do inside the maintenance window.
I think (hope) you can just change a conname on C for the TO.A sdr chl and refresh the cluster on all nodes, which would be much easier and take less time than above steps. I'm concerned about QMID changing on A & B and the cluster retaining old conname information.
Any insight appreciated. |

What version of WMQ? v5.3 onwards allows forcing out a qm by QMID rather than name. What about migrating the Repos's to the partials and just bringing in the replacements as partials? _________________ It's puzzling, I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like this before...and it's hard to soar like an eagle when you're surrounded by turkeys. |

A & B are 5.3 and will be new 6.0, C & D are existing 5.3 (all Solaris).

This procedure is documented in the Queue Manager Clusters manual, Chapter 9: Advanced Tasks, Task 10: Removing a queue manager from a cluster.
Follow this procedure exactly! |

Thanks for that input. I read that section and realized that's the way to do it safely - and it minimizes the action on the remote servers.
One question: when I have removed the old A & B qm's per the book, C still has a sdr chl to A defined. Is it necessary to delete it and redefine it when the new A is brought up?
