This is generally how HA solutions handle this, by symlinking stuff under /var/mqm/ to /shared_disk/mqm

But you should try and avoid a symlink in this case if possible and do a hard mount of /bigdisk/mqm as /var/mqm/.

Because the documentation for configuring MQ recommends using a mount point instead of a symlink.

It explicitly recommends creating /var/mqm/ on a different filesystem than /var, and specifically recommends using a mount point instead of ln -s.

I'm sure there is a better reason - I just don't know what it is. The documentation is generally all I have to work from.

Really? SupportPac MC91 specifically says to set up symlinks to the queue manager directories. Documentation from Sun re: Suncluster and from Veritas re: VCS for WMQ support specifically say to set up symlinks.

Symlinks are all we have used on our high-availability queue managers for years.

Yes, for HA the documentation says use symlinks. But that's for stuff under /var/mqm/.

For a basic, NON HA install, the Quick Beginnings guide for various unixes recommends doing a mount.

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/wmqv6/v6r0/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.mq.amqcac.doc/hq10280_.htm

"Create and mount a filesystem called /var/mqm".

My bad. My mind immediately shifted to HA when I thought about moving /var/mqm because HA systems are the only ones where we have anything other than mounted /var/mqm and /var/mqm/log filesystems.

As usual the Grand Poobah sets the rest of us straight!

I'm not saying it won't work - although there are comments that "/var/mqm and /var/mqm/log *must* be local filesystems" - but the docs recommend using a mount.

I believe that comment was mostly for the obvious performance and reliability reasons...
