I just put in the order for IBM Tivoli Omegamon XE for Messaging 6.0 for Z/OS. We didn't order any alternate platform agents yet because we were unsure whether we needed to. We have Unix and windows MQ Queue managers, and we were thinking that we could just turn their event queues into remote queues pointing to the ZOS event queues, then just monitor the ZOS queue manager. I'm curious, has anyone done this? If so, are there a lot of things that are not being monitored on the alternate platform with this approach? The reason we thought this approach might be sufficient is because we have home grown monitoring that uses one queue manager to collect all the events on all the other queue managers. We thought we could have the ZOS queue manager collect all the events and then omegamon would monitor ZOS.
Any ideas or input?
Thanks,
Gary

How will you be notified that a sender channel to zOS is broken?

What you are doing is making all your stuff report through MQ. This is not good as you have no "dead man switch" and your monitoring only works as long as MQ works well.

You need some "out of bandwidth" monitoring that will alert you on channel down and agent unreachable and all the other niceties.

This means you probably need to buy the omegamon agent for the other platforms but from my experience the price pain threshold is far from being as high as on the mainframe.

Enjoy

Thanks for the replies. I have considered those things. I realize it certainly is not a perfect solution. But I was just curious if others have tried different things to monitor and how they did it.

Thanks again for the quick response,
Gary
