My channel disconnects after 6000 seconds. I guess that's the default timeout. I tried to change this using alter channel (channelname) chltype(sdr) discint(*). It's not able to recognize this *, since it expects an Integer. How do I make this channel run indefinetly? appreciate your time.

DISCINT(0) is the setting that won't disconnect an inactive channel (see MQSeries Commands manual)
