Hello,

Does anyone know if Mr. Kolban is still working on MQJExplorer and how to reach him?

If he isn't working on MQJE anymore, is the source available anywhere?

Thanks,

Hopefully someone else will jump in and correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm fairly sure Kolban is not working on MQJExplorer anymore.
The source code is IBM's property, so you'll need to take it up with them if you want it. As far as I know, the source code has never been made available.

I wish IBM would incorporate these sort of tools into the product, or make them fully open-source so that others could develop them.

They seem content to let fantastic products just die, MQLSX for example.

As for the REXX language - it could be ruling the open source world instead of (once more) becoming just a mainframe curiousity.

The eclipse tooling in v6 is better... apparently all the plug-ins are extendable.

Plus, you'd hate to see IBM dilute an important third party opportunity, wouldn't you?

FYIon

MQDocument is partly written in NetRexx, there are many flavors of REXX out there that are not only Mainframe.
All hail King NetRexx!

OORexx was open sourced by IBM and is now maintained by RexxLA

All,

Actually, a few months ago, I had a discussion with Neil Kolban about licensing or buying or even open sourcing MQJExplorer. Neil said that he had turned the source code over to IBM and they had moth-balled it.

I asked Neil to check with IBM about licensing MQJExplorer but that didn't go anywhere.

It is too bad because it is always nice to have alternatives. Note: If anyone from IBM is reading this and can influence the appropriate person, then please let me know because I am serious.

On a different note, I have been using Rexx since the early 90's - mainframe, then OS/2 and now Windows. It's a great scripting language. In my opinion, IBM took far too long in turning Rexx over to the open source community.

Regards,

A plugin for Eclipse comes to mind...

Well, that's too bad. I guess I'll have to solve my problem without the source, then.

Which of couse means that nobody else will be able to profit from my bug fixes.

*sigh*

Hi,

Actually, I too have made lots of changes to MQJExplorer but like you said, nobody will ever benefit from it.

pardon my ignorance, but how do you fix bugs or make changes to a program when you don't have the source code?

(just curious)

Hi,

You want me to give up my trade secrets?

It is the good part of Java, write once, run everywhere. Meaning, that the class files can be decompiled very easily. Of course, that is the bad part of Java from a commercial developer point of view.

From my point of view, DJ Java Decompiler is one of the best Java decompilers around. Its best feature is its recursive ability. You can point at a JAR file and it will decompile all class files in it.

So, I decompile say MQJExplorer then load into into Eclipse and off I go trying to figure out what and why the original developer did what they did.

Hope that helps.

Regards,
Roger Lacroix

I think that is the worst part of Java!

Hello all: If you guys are interested I guess MQJexplorer is no longer available and Kolban deleted the code from the download site.

Here is the message posted

MQJExplorer - Download
Distribution of MQJExplorer has ended. I hope it has been of use to you and you have enjoyed the functions it provided.

Please don't contact me asking for a copy. This package has been deleted.
