Okay,
I want to learn this, so I am staring a little basement project...
I'm new to all this but I am attempting it anyway. I thought I would ask a few basic questions to all you before I embark. I will consult the linux quick beg also.
(using trial versions)
So first of all, I am under the impression I need to install WMQ 5.3 before WAS 5.1 because I do not wish to use the embedded jms provider, I would like to use the full WMQ.
I created two directories opt/mqm and var/mqm and created a user and made him part of the mqm group.
I will now download java SDK 1.3 (or should I go with 1.4) I thought was 5.1 can only use 1.3, but I guess it may have its own anyway...
I would like to do the installs from the shell not through KDE Xwindows so I learn more.
are there any specail things I need to know before trying to run the wmq files? and I just put the wmq files in opt/mqm and run them there correct?

Note you need more than just 2 directories.
If you want a really healthy system you should have the following
/opt/mqm on a "programs" file system (/opt/)
/var/mqm/ on its own file system ( we usually give it 4 Gigs)
/mqmlogs on its own file system (another 4 Gigs)
/mqmlogs/archive on its own file system (size at your discretion. Need to be enough to offload the logs. can be backed up before archiving to tape or deleting by date constraint)
With own file system think about Disk crashes and failures. (Unix mounts)

thanks saper.
being a linux newbie..
I check the mount points in the KDE configuration and I only see
I have:
/ hda1 at 5.8 gig
swap hda5 at 484 MB
/home hda6 at 142 Gig
are you saying I need to break off two more and put the /mqmlogs and /mqmlogs/archive on the?
did I do this all wrong was / supposed to have a lot more than just a measlely 5.8 gig or it deosnt matter? |

For purely performance reasons, a production MQ uinx server should have the different file systems mounted on separate drives as fjb_saper indicated.
For a dev machine, you are fine with your current partitioning.
Even on a production machine, you may not need all of the partitions fjb_saper indicates mounted on separate disks - it all depends on your requirements!
