We use MQ V5.3.1 on our z/OS 1.4 host to facilitate communications between MQ JAVA Clients on WAS boxes and CICS & IMS on z/OS. The other day we IPLed the z/OS host during normal peak business hours. MQ recovered first and while waiting for CICS & IMS to recover, we noticed that the number of Server channels started was about 6 times the norm. During this time, access to the JAVA CLients was still available. However, the volume of activity was low, since no application replies were being received from the host. As soon as CICS & IMS were back on-line, the number of Server Channels dropped back down to the normal volume.

What mechanism caused all the extra Server Channels to be started while CICS & IMS were unavailable ?

Well if the Applications were up when the IPL started, the apps themselves may have caused all the "extra" instances of the SVRCONN Channels to start base on demand.
