Wondering if MQSI v2.1 database node can connect to an AS400? Is this just a ODBC driver issue? The node will update/insert into an AS400 file system (not using DB2/400).

Hi,

WMQI connects to an application DB via an ODBC connection. The only supported DBs are DB2, Oracle, Sybase and SQL-Server (on Windows) for which there are ODBC drivers supplied by IBM.

Since there is no IBM supplied ODBC driver, you would not be able to connect to AS/400 DBs.

MQSI V2.1 as well as WBIMB can access a DB2 database on an AS/400 via a combination of the DB2 ODBC driver and DB2 Connect. There are some specific considerations in terms of access security - the userid/pwd associated with the MQSI Broker must also be valid on the AS/400 for data access. In this respect, WBIMB is better.

When this support was first provided, now about 4 years ago, it required fixes for DB2 Connect, DB2 on AS/400 and MQSI 2.1. But, as long as things are relatively current, that will not be a concern. What you'll need to do is to define the connection between your broker machine and the AS/400 using the DB2 Connect product. Of course, you'll need the typical ODBC definitions, and so on. Getting the right level of security set up on the AS/400 can also be a challange.

I personally know one of the eraly users of the "fixed" code. He moved up to WBIMB last year.

If you look carefully at te support website, it does state that the iSeries (or AS/400) is supported for application databases. This means that a Broker database cannot go there.

Cheers
Bill
