I would like to get an understanding of what other large companies are doing in the way of archive log retention. I currently have my archive log retention set to 7 days. If in fact I had to recover from say three or 4 day old logs it would take an entire day just to read that many tapes at which time my queue manager would be inaccessable. Chances are the data is not worth the time it takes to restore it. Right now we are using about 600+ tapes for archive logs. We could reduce that number greatly by changing the retention to say 3 days. I would like to hear what others are doing.

I am running MQ 5.3.1 and we do roughly 40 to 60 million messages a day through a single queue manager.

Some things I would take into consideration is: How often are the
pagesets (fuzzy?) being backed up? You need enough log data for UOW
recovery/page media recovery. Do you have UOWs that span Archive
logs? I backup up my pagesets once a day and keep the ARC logs 7
days.

If you have no UOW spanning ARC logs and if you backed up the Pagesets
once a day, 3-4 days of ARC Log data would be sufficient.

Another think what kind of TAPE are you using to ARC to
(3490 or 3590). You may get a 6 to 1 ratio with a 3590.
I just inherited 3 queue-managers. The ARC logs would span 6 tapes at 3490. When I switched them to 3590. I only need 1 tape to ARC now (and the logcopy data is 22,000 tracks).

Thanks for the feedback.

At present we do page set backup's once a week. After reading your post and the Concepts and Planning guide it looks like I should be backing them up "at least" one a day.

We are using 3490 tapes right now. I would prefer to use High capacity tape, but on the other hand I would not be completely utilizing a full high cap tape.
