Folks,

I have been chasing a performance problem for a few weeks and I am extremely burned out.

My business area hired a contractor to build them a FAT client. (I know what your thinking and the web client is my preference also. I didn't have any input on that decision.) The fat client was designed to make several trips to the database to retrieve data container information. I have advised the programmer to change the code so that the trips to the database are limited. They are in the process of implementing that change. I still have a weird issue though. It seems that the performance in the AM is really good (2 seconds), but as the day goes on the performance seems to get worse. I originally thought this was because of load or the number of users is increasing. Yes, I think this has something to do with it but it's not the total problem. If load was the only problem, I should see the system regain all the performance back at the end of the day, but I don't see that. We do bounce the configuration and the queue manager each night, which seems to help BIG TIME. I am just absolutely puzzled as to why the performance is much better after the configuration and MQ bounce. Can someone explain what might be going on here. I have noticed that the session table is growing in size thought the day. It seems we might have a problem with the design of the client and how it manages sessions. I actually see a high number of sessions for every user. Some of these sessions are only minutes apart. Could this be causing a performance problem?

Dave:

A quick thought. If your session table is growing it is most likely due to SessionMode.Default logons that are NOT being logged off. These will stick around for the default 20 hours. Not sure why this would create that big a problem, but, the bounce will definitely clear the Session Table.

Also make sure that you applied the latest MQ CSD (CSD#7 I think).
In addition make sure that your DB optimizes for a lagre amount of session entries i.e. run RUNSTAT/REBIND with a DB that contains many session entries.
