If you have WSAD5 then this is a good one
http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/websphere/library/techarticles/0307_wilkinson/wilkinson1.html

But, you will also have to understand how to use JMSAdmin.

There are samples if you install MQ or Java/JMS piece of it.
<MQ Install Dir>/Tools/Java/JMS

JMSAdmin is in
<MQInstall Dir>/java/bin

to learn..

shoudl I take transactions that our system currently builds with MQ 5.3 and let them queue up, pull them out, transform them into JMS messages then transform them back into MQ 5.3 messages and put them back on the queue and see they process okay?

or does that sound dumb? I'm just trying to learn - thanks

I'm not 100% certain that I understand what you are doing, but I don't think I'd recommend getting messages to convert them into JMS format so that you can process them. You might want to look into the TARGCLIENT property of the Q destination as a way to send a message in the correct format.

Also, if you are just learning, you might want to look at the samples on this site and at: http://www.developer.ibm.com/tech/sampmq.html

They'll probably help you get up and running a little quicker.
