Hi
The sys admin at my place of work can't help me out this week, so I thought I'd throw this out to you good people.
I've downloaded the Perl MQSeries module from CPAN, ftp'd it over to a Solaris box but the 'make' step fails as no cc compiler was found on that machine.
I thought we could work around this by obtaining a compiled module from an MQ whizz.
I'm reachable at sean.hogan@cazenove.com
If this request reveals a fundamental misunderstanding on my part on how Perl modules are installed, I'm sure one of you will let me know very quickly.
Many thanks in advance. _________________ MQSI2 certified specialist

You'll need someone who has mostly the same version of Solaris and has an installed compiler to build this for you.
Have you considered asking your admins to install a compiler on a similar machine?
I forget, also, what the status of gcc on Solaris is these days. _________________ I am *not* the model of the modern major general. |

Yes, I would recommend staying away from using binaries compiled on other machines. I've had HUGE problems with that in the past and they are very hard to diagnose.
There's a good reason why they supply the source code and not a binary
Sometimes even having the same OS as Jeff suggests is not enough. One time I had to install the Perl DBI package on 8 RS6000s. All identical hardware and identical versions of AIX. So I figured, hey I'll compile on one and FTP the binary to the others. Big mistake. Apparently during the compile it was putting some machine specific information in the binary (it was 3 years ago, I can't remember which!) and we got all kinds of weird errors on the other 7 machines. Took quite a while to figure out that recompiling on each of the other 7 fixed it. _________________ Brandon Duncan

Well, it was just a speculative query. Thanks anyway. I'll grab the sys admin today. _________________ MQSI2 certified specialist
