I have been asked to start producing usage and possible performance reports for MQ on MVS. I am wondering what most of you are using to produce these type of reports – SMF 115 and 116 or vendor software?

Since I have 60 very busy MVS MQM’s, spilling 116’s is probably not the best idea. I see the 115’s break down API calls. There really is NOT, unless I missed it, something like “Total Messages Processed” by the MQM. Since the audience is use to CICS and IMS transaction numbers it will be difficult to explain the difference between those sub-systems vs. MQ’s where messages can be MQPUT to locally and processed locally or be shipped out to another MQM.

So I guess my question is, What do you think best equates to total messages processed by the MQM?

We also have Candle Command Center. I have viewed the sample MQ Reports produced. Can someone point me to the manual that explains how to customize these reports and maybe email them when the interval expires?

CICSPROG,

This may not be the "exact" type of information you want, but you can run SMF 115 to pick up the total number of MQPUTs, MQPUT1s, & MQGETs. Adding the MQPUTs & MQPUT1s would be a good starting point for total number messages processed. If you need to show a little more work done you could throw in the MQGETs for good measure

Here is the display for the output of SMF 115's for a particular QMGR on our z/OS system.

Quote:
z/OS: MQ QMGR: Time: 2004134 08:09:59.59.
Message manager : QMST.
MQOPENs 275, MQCLOSEs 270, MQGETs 3682, MQPUTs 5488.
MQPUT1s 9, MQINQs 20, MQSETs 0.
