Topic: Prevention of Database Deadlocks
I have the following environment on my IBM ThinkPad T40 laptop:
- Windows XP Professional with SP1
- 1.4GHz Centrino Processor
- 1.25 GB RAM
- DB2 v8.1.2.169 (Build level s030508, PTF WR21318)
- MQSeries 5.3 CSD1
- MQWF 3.4 Service Pack 4
I need to run some basic load tests (1 MQWF server, 3 users, 1 process starter creating a new process instance every 5 seconds or so). But I continue to receive Database deadlocks on a fairly regular basis (every 2nd or 3rd load test I run). Although it looks like they ultimately get cleared up (i.e. no messages on the Hold queue), it takes too long for them to be processed, and the APIs time out, which creates an unstable environment.
After every time that such an event occurs, I reorganize the database with the suggestions provided in the Administration Guide, which I augmented to include the actual REORG statements on the tables and indices. I am not sure what else to do. I know that I could maybe increase Bufferpools, but am not sure how, or what values to use.
Could you please forward any suggestions on how to tune DB2, MQSeries or MQWF that could help reduce the frequencey of the database deadlocks?
Thanks. Marc _________________ Thank you.

Marc:
You should post this to IBM Newsgroup also, that way you might get some help from the Developers if you have not already. _________________ John McDonald

- refer to a redbook on db2 tuning on aix.. should work for other platforms
- try increasing the exe servers.. though it is recommended 2 x no of processors
- reorgs can degrade the performance and cause deadlocks .. if not done.. let the dba look into this..
- monitor the processor utilization and IO load for any abnormal activity
- buffer pool/heap size increasing should help.. but again.. the dba should help u with right numbers..
hope this helps

Hi Marc
I know you probably already did this but I'll ask anyway. Make sure you do a runstat rebind to bind the latest access paths.. I do runstats rebinds on a nightly basis or we see tons of deadlock errors.
good luck
