Hi ,
I am a new member to this forum. I am working in mainframe platform and would like to switch to the MQ series application programming. I am planning to take a IBM certification on the same. But got confused by the number of certifications they have on this topic. Can anyone give me some suggestions as to which one should I go for. I have 2.5 yrs IT experience and would like to go for the application programming side of the MQ series. Please give your valuable suggestions.

There are three certifications for the base WebSphere MQ product:

System Administrator - Test 294
Solution Designer - Test 296
Solution Developer - Test 297

If you are going to be doing development, I would think that you would be interested in the Developer one. However, if you are going to be responsible for installing and configuring the Qmgrs that you'll develop with, you might want to go for the Administrator one as well.

The rest of the certifications are on products in the family (ie, brokers, workflow, everyplace).

The Solution Designer certificate is the basic "progammer" certification, appropriate for someone who knows programming, but hasn't worked with MQ very much.

The Solution Developer certificate is more advanced than Solution Designer. It covers more of the system design and architecture parts of MQSeries development, rather than focusing tightly on details of the APIs. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who hasn't spent some significant time actually writing MQ applications.

In either case, I highly recommend reviewing the materials suggested on the certification test page, and taking the sample test first.

But please don't ask here for answers to the sample questions. Not only are they all documented in the manuals somewhere, it's unclear whether IBM would appreciate it. Plus, it's a lot better if you take the time to research the answers yourself, so you actually understand them.

I thought the designer test was the one that covered architecture kinds of things and the developer test was the one that covered programming?

Not according to the objectives: http://www-1.ibm.com/certify/tests/obj296.shtml, http://www-1.ibm.com/certify/tests/obj297.shtml

And definately not based on what was covered when I took 297 a month or so ago.

But, yes, the "Designer" and "Developer" names are, umm, counter-intuitive.
