Please correct me if I am wrong.

Encoding is used for Numbers
CodedCharacterSet is used for Character data
Format - ?? I do not understand this.

All above three attributes are of message data.

MQMD character-string fields have to be in CodedCharacterSet of message-receiving qmgr. When it can happen? If it happens, what should be done?

Format describes, well - the format of a message (wheter it is a string or a more complex structure). The most common is MQFMT_STRING. MQSeries uses also 'internal' formats like MQFMT_DEAD or MQFMT_XMIT. You can define your own formats. But be carefull - if you do and you need conversion between code pages, you'll have to write your own conversion routine.
