I had booked my room with IBM when I enrolled for the conf but have found that the Hilton is offering the same rooms for 59.00 a night and the IBM cost is 109.00 a night.

Is there any benefit with keeping the booking with IBM? A 250.00 savings is quite large!!

I've learnt from experience that "conference rates" - probably pay a commission to the conference hosts.

Sometimes you may get a better class of room at the official rate but I would'nt worry about that.

This is especially the case at locations like Orlando or Vegas which are of course vacation destinations with plenty of deals!

The typical deal is that for a guaranteed number of attendees using the "conference rate", some of the rooms will be higher-spec (normally then given to "VIP" attendees or speakers) and the organisers do not pay full-rate for things such as the conference rooms - perhaps a meeting room is thrown in free.

The more people who book rooms outside the official mechanism, the more likely it is that penalties have to be paid because of the guarantee not being met. And that in turn would lead to a higher price for a future event.

The details might vary, but that's the principle that has been explained to me in the past, when we've asked the same question.

Hi,

Last weekend my wife found some specials at Sahara for $41 per night. She booked it but then found specials at Excalibur for $49 per night. My kids went nuts. So here I sit typing in an Excalibur hotel room - Yes, we can early to play!!!

Regards,
Roger

Thanks for the info. I just unreserved my room through IBM, and reserved one directly through Hilton. That saved me $80 bucks.
