I have an application installed on WAS that uses WebSphere MQ 6. The transaction logs are getting too large and causing problems. The logging is linear (for recovery purposes.)
Initial analysis has shown that there are a large number of browses going on. However I am not sure if browses cause data to be written to the transaction log, since a browse shouldn't change the data on the queue.
So, my question is, do browses (they are via JMS not native MQ) cause data to be written to the transaction logs, and so could they be the cause of my problem?
thank you. |

To ask the obvious questions:
Are you running the housekeeping for the logs frequently enough?
Are you taking sufficient media images to move the last log needed forward?
What maintenance level of WMQv6? _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

Unfortunately when I say I am having this problem, I mean my customer is having this problem, so I am a level removed.
They are happy with their housekeeping and media levels and are pointing at our application. To be fair there is excessive browsing, but I was wondering if this would cause the transaction log to grow or whether I should look elsewhere. |

This doesn't mean their housekeeping is right.
Has this just started happening? Have they just taken on your application, or started using it in larger volumes? If either of these is true maybe they need to revisit their housekeeping and/or sizing.

You'd think browsing inside a UoW would do something to the logging (especially with WAS in the mix) but I dread to think what. I certainly don't consider myself sufficiently qualified to comment on JMS or WAS to this level; a Java person will be along in a minute. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.
