I am trying to increase the maximum number of [active] channels by editing mqs.ini and/or qm.ini. However, any number above 100 (which I have found is the default) is ignored. Numbers lower than 100 are recognized, so I'm confident that the files are being read.

Is there any other configuration that needs to be changed to allow for a higher number of channels?

It's on AIX and invoked through inetd.

a) V5.3 is out of support. Well out. 2 major releases behind. 3 if you don't stick to the letter of the law & think v7.1 is a big deal.

b) The inetd daemon was depreciated even in 5.3. I don't know it's imposing this limit but I wouldn't be surprised if it was.

Try using the recommended method.

Yes and sympathetic as I am to you in your predicament I'm fine and thanks for asking.

But are you still using inetd? Because if you are my limited level of sympathy is going to evaporate.

Thanks for quick responses!

Running outside inetd also reaches max channels (AMQ9513) at 100, so inetd does not seem to be the reason for this behaviour.

Are there any other parameters in mqs.ini or qm.ini (or anywhere else) that affect directly or indirectly MaxChannels or MaxActiveChannels?

It well depends on the fixpack of MQ v5.3. Make sure you are at FixPack 14.

Do nothing else until you are at FixPack 14.

There is a significant difference between MaxChannels and MaxActiveChannels.

Fortunately for you, the v5.3 System Administration guide is still available.

You need to increase BOTH MaxChannels AND MaxActiveChannels.

If my memory serves me right, if MaxActiveChannels is not specified it defaults to MaxChannels. I would try and just set MaxChannels. If it does not work, I would then also set MaxActiveChannels.

Have fun

You need to restart the QM to pick up any changes to qm.ini.

If you have an extended support contract with IBM, then a PMR is in order.

Thanks for the link to the Sys Adm guide.

I've tried to increase both and each of the parameters, both in qm.ini and in mqs.ini, separately and simultaneously. (I think I've covered all combinations.)

We're not at FixPack 14, so I'll suggest patching.

When you say that it depends on the FixPack, does that imply that there are bugs in earlier FixPacks that affect this very problem?

I'm saying that, first of all, if you're not at FixPack 14 with MQ v5.3, then all bets are off about everything. Even if you have an extended support contract, you will need to be at FP 14 to open a PMR.

Secondly, the far recesses of my brain suggest that the ability to even set MaxActiveChannels was introduced in some fix level of v5.3, and so again if you're not at the last one, all bets are off.

Thirdly, I'll mention that all of the fixes that are included in every fix level of every version of WMQ are listed on IBm's website in the information that comes with the relevant fix levels. Even if you don't necessarily get a link to the APAR page specifically, you do at least get the APAR #s that are included and can then search on those.

Yes, I have restarted after every change to mqs.ini and qm.ini.

Although even without restarting, each new connection seems to check the configuration:

I noticed when lowering Max[Active]Channels to 5, that QM immediately logged that "there are to many channels active to start another. The current defined maximum number of active channels is 5."

Did you set both MaxChannels and MaxActiveChannels, and restart the QM? I know, I know, it says the latter will default to the former if not set, but do try it. It might be needed at the old fixpack you are at, and even if not needed, its one extra line in an ini file that explicitly tells the reader of the file what your intentions are for MaxActiveChannels.

If this doesn't work, post the specific error you get in the QM's error log when you try to go over 100 concurrent channels.

Yes, I have tried to set each and both of MaxChannels and MaxActiveChannels.

The errors are AMQ9513: Maximum number of channels reached, followed by AMQ9999: Channel program ended abnormally.
