What is the "OriginalLength" field used for in the InputRoot.MQMD ... I see it as "-1" and would expect it to contain the length of the MQ message as red from queue?

I suggest you look at click on the Documentation tab, look in AP Reference for MQMD. |

I guess 99.999% of all questions can be answered with a sentence like this.... _________________ If you do not know the answer or you get the urge to answer with "RTFM" or "Search better in this forum", please refrain from doing so, just move on to the next question. Much appreciated.

Only questions asked by people who haven't checked the documentation first...
It's about 50% of other questions... _________________ I am *not* the model of the modern major general. |

The percentage is actually slightly higher
On a more general point, there's a post someplace in here "Asking questions the smart way" which should be mandatory reading. It makes the valid point that if you say "I've got this question and I've looked in the {insert book here} and can't find anything relevant" you get a better quality of response that just going "Tell me how I {insert task here}".
Of course, sometime you can find what the manual says without knowing what it means. Every time I look at a Java manual for instance... _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

IMHO it is just a waste of time and bandwidth to tell someone to go and read the manual or even worst "search better in this forum". I do know how to read, I do know how to search - could not get to my answer from the message broker manuals or this forum... so I ask.
If you do not want to answer me.... please just ignore my question.... maybe another person will take pity on my pour soul and answer me. _________________ If you do not know the answer or you get the urge to answer with "RTFM" or "Search better in this forum", please refrain from doing so, just move on to the next question. I'm forced to disagree. Bandwidth is cheap and the more we can spread the message that not only are there are manuals, this forum is not a substitute for training or reading. I don't wish to impune yourself per se, but a quick browse will reveal an increasing number of newbies asking either very basic questions or for the design of their project.

But there's nothing in your post to indicate that. Speaking for myself I'm not psychic (but am something that sounds similar) so is your question "I don't understand what the AP guide says about this field because I don't understand segmentation" or something along those lines?

I read, and I read, and I try, and I still sound like an idiot when I talk about Java. Mostly because I am an idiot when it comes to Java. It's like a blind spot. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

Point taken.
I shall continue to use the cheap bandwidth I've been provided with through the inequitible commerical practices of early 21st Century neo-globalism to advance my views. Whilst campaigning to close the digital divide and expand the free flow of information. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

In this case, though, you did get a very good answer - although you may not have liked the way it was phrased.
The APR page on OriginalLength, http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/wmqv6/v6r0/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.mq.csqzak.doc/js01321.htm, says

Thanks for the link jefflowrey, much appreciated. Pity it is an infocenter link, REALLY slow and takes ages to go there, but hey, it works. _________________ If you do not know the answer or you get the urge to answer with "RTFM" or "Search better in this forum", please refrain from doing so, just move on to the next question. I took a one time hit and downloaded the PDFs. Much faster to access & I get on better with the search facility. _________________ Honesty is the best policy.
