Hi all,
I would like to discuss the use of the MQSeries command server. Are all available monitoring tools (esp. contact admin and MQSoftware) using the MQSeries command server?
How have you secured the use of the command server?

We use BMC Patrol and by modifying the KMs (Knowledge Modules) we can restrict certain MQ users on what they can do. We can take it a step further by altering PSL (Patrol Scripting Language) but I leave it to a BMC rep to contact you and explain in more detail. I'm just a user...  |

You may want to ask this question directly to the folks at Reconda, through the Reconda forum on this site. Their product works via the command server I believe, and you can download an evaluation version of their product, AppWatch, through their site.

Roland,
Reconda's product QN-AppWatch is not a monitoring tool: it is a development and administration support tool -- we do not provide any automated monitoring through QN-AppWatch. However, QN-AppWatch does make use of the Command Server to support some of its functionality. As to whether use of the Command Server is secured, the answer is if an authorized Id (such as "mqm" or "MUSR_MQADMIN") has direct access to the command server (via client or server interface), then all the functionality of the command server will be available. QN-AppWatch takes the approach of using multiple layers of accessibility (granted to specific User Ids.) to protect it's functionality and any interaction with the command server.
As for monitoring tools, such as CCC, BMC Patrol, contact admin etc., it is my experience that the requirements of monitoring functionality usually mandate use of a dedicated agent running on the server being monitored, so my guess would be that those agents would provide most of the required functionality -- but whether those products also use the command server to support any functions is something you would have to ask the individual vendors. |
