I have an .mxsd, created from an imported schema, where I want to alter a dateTime representation for an element (get rid of the ZZZ!). However the editor view is marked 'read-only'. What causes this and can I unset it?

I have seen this also - what it is telling you is that there is another .mxsd in the message set project that has the definition for that (and other) elements. You will need to find and open that .mxsd and make the change. When you save that .msxd, the primary .mxsd will be "updated" automatically.
