What's after Grand Master? ... now that the grand poobah has taken to double posting to emphasize the point BTW I have used lower case on windows without specifying the queue name in ' ' for V5.3 and it did not get converted to uppercase, I have experienced the need for ' ' only on the AS/400 but I am not even close to being a poobah as yet. so I could've been mistaken.

I don't know, but the poobah has such a lead no mere mortal can catch him (especially if he starts double posting to build his lead )!

Sorry - it's just I've done the "double message" or "no message" thing so often it's nice to have a go at some other poor victim!

(You send a "no message" by catching the Send button in Outlook after typing the receipients but before typing anything. Damn touch sensitive laptop pad!)

Moving back onto topic, I though the wrapping to upper case was an AS/400 construct (like z/OS) rather than an MQ one. Certainly I can create lowercase objects without a ' in sight.

Better to use upper case though.

Just tried the following on my Windows MQ 6 and I did not need the ' ' for addressing lower case or mixed case. I have no choice but to enter the queue names as 'test' 'Test' and QM name as 'Hassan' on the AS/400 or they will all get converted to TEST and HASSAN. I hope that clarifies what I am trying to say
C:\>amqsput Test Hassan
Sample AMQSPUT0 start
target queue is Test
123
199
Sample AMQSPUT0 end
C:\>amqsput TEST Hassan
Sample AMQSPUT0 start
target queue is TEST
875
jkhsjkhajhds
Sample AMQSPUT0 end
C:\>amqsput test Hassan
Sample AMQSPUT0 start
target queue is test
xxxx
ttttt
Sample AMQSPUT0 end

All messages did wind up in the correct queues.

Agreed Vitor. It does make sense to use UPPERCASE all around since you rule out some of the potential mixups.

Just for the record I was also trying to pull zee magnifico poobah's leg.

So was I - part of an ongoing attempt to get him to grind his enemies underfoot.

I have way too much time on my hands

If you do a search here, you will find dozens of cases where people have written code that tries to open queue 'test', when they have defined it as "def qlocal(test)", and they get a 2085.

In general, just because something works on Windows...

Names in WebSphere MQ are case sensitive; however, you should remember that lowercase characters that are not contained within quotation marks are folded to uppercase.

I am not sure where you did it. Even Windows runmqsc converts lowercase to uppercase if not wrapped in single quotes.
If you are using MQExplorer then it will not do. If you are using runmqsc it will definitely convert it to uppercase.

Aha!!!!! that explains it ..... I wasn't talking about MQSC but the command line. MQSC does behave just the way you and poobah describe it.

But on the AS/400 even command line requires ' ' for mixed or lower case names.

And what happens if that attempt turns you into my enemy?

Ground underfoot I imagine - poobah assisted suicide

(But what a way to go - killed by such greatness!)
