The QM was created by WebSphere during installation. (so, yes, it was created by 5.3)

You should, at a minimum, be able to upgrade MQ to v5.3 CSD 14.

This will not in any way affect your WSAD desktops, nor even your WAS runtime.

This identical deployment is working fine in other environments so this must be a configuration / environmental issue.
