You can use the GUI version of smit (if you have a xserver running on your workstation ) or loggin in the graphic console (CDE.OPENWIN,etc)

To migrate the messages, you can use the WMQTool prgram (for java) http://www.niratul.com and
connect to OLD qmgr, export all the messages.
Then connect to NEW QMGR and import the messages.

If you can compile the amqsget0.c program, change the value

MQBYTE buffer[101]; /* message buffer */

to another value and try again.
