I am trying to deploy MQ Series v5.1 on
HPUX11. I have everything working ok
except that every so often runmqsc fails
with the folowing error :

AMQ9508 - Program cannot connect to queue
manager.

This tends to happen on and off fop about 1/2 an hour and then runmqsc stops working completely until MQSeries is stopped and started.

It would appear to be a resource problem but I have made all the reconmended kernel parameter changes as recommended in IBM's MQSeries "Quick Beginnings".

Is anyone aware of anything else that may cause this.

Cheers

Stephen

Are there any additional errors in the amqerr01.log files?

The only messages in the error logs that relete to the time of the problems were found in the /var/adm/qmgrs/@SYSTEM/errors/AMQERR01.LOG.

The messages were as follows:

AMQ9508 - Program cannot connect to queue manager.
Explanation - The connection attempt to queue manager 'ccfmq1' failed with reason code 2102

AMQ9999 - Channel program ended abnormally
Explanation - Channel program 'SMARTAGG.CLIENT.01' ended abnormally.

Don't know if this helps !
Any advice would be gratefully received.

Well,
I thought looking up the 2102 reason code in the Messages manual might be a good idea. Here's what it says:

2102 X'836' MQRC_RESOURCE_PROBLEM
| Insufficient system resources available.
| There are insufficient system resources to complete the call successfully.
| On OS/390, this reason code does not occur.
| Corrective action: Run the application when the machine is less heavily loaded.
| On Digital OpenVMS, OS/2 Warp, OS/400, Tandem NSK, and UNIX platforms, consult the
| FFST record to obtain more detail about the problem.

So, can you check (and post) any .FDC files that have been generated? I don't know much about HP-UX but on other Unix systems shared memory and semaphore limits are often a cause for these kinds of problems. The Quick Beginnings Manual for HP-UX should give you the information needed to set up your machine for MQ use.
Hope that helps,
Stefan

After further investigation I have determined the cause of the problem - though
I don't know how to fix it. HPUX has a product known as glance which allows me to view details about current processes.

Whilst viewing this I noticed that the thread count for the amqzlaa0 (the local queue manager agent) was steadily increasing. It appears that everytime a runmqsc query is sent a new thread is introduced but when the query ends the thread is not being released. This means that the thread count continues to go up until it reaches the max_proc_thread value (1024) after that runmqsc stops running as it cannot open any more threads.

I have passed the info to IBM and will post a fix if they come up with one.
