Hello, experts

If lots of messages are published to a topic where no subscription exists, what happens to these messages? Will they pile up in any queue? Or negatively impact QMGR performance somehow?

I searched on MQ Knowledge Center, the closest answer is “they won’t be distributed” But I want to learn more on such messages.

Thank you!
Song

https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/ibm-mq/9.2?topic=components-publishers-publications

"By default, after a publication is sent to all interested subscribers it is discarded. However, a publisher can specify that a copy of a publication is retained so that it can be sent to future subscribers who register an interest in the topic."

vis. If there are no active subscriptions (durable or non-durable), and its not a "retained" publication, it will be discarded by the queue manager.

It is never placed on any queue, so never really exists as a message.

Depending on how you are doing your publishing, there is a PMO option which will return a warning to the application if no subscriptions matched at publish time. It's called MQPMO_WARN_IF_NO_SUBS_MATCHED (see https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/ibm-mq/9.2?topic=applications-publishing-options)
