Is there a way to figure out from the statistics:
1) That the workload is too heavy, and an additional instance is required?
2) That there are too many instances, and some can be discarded?

What's wrong with the auto-scaling feature that controls instances?

But yes, using the statistics is the way you determine if you have the instances set correctly.

Do you suggest to use it by default? there is no overhead when turning this feature on, when not needed?

Is there a better way to do it, other then adding instances, until messages/second does not improve?

I'm not entirely sure you can disable it, though someone may know better than me. It's certainly got to be easier and less resource intensive than building a feedback loop where the instances are controlled by the resource stats.

But if you're that worried about overhead, you may have a bigger resource problem.

Absolutely yes. If that was the case, everyone would just set additional instances to 255 on every single flow and walk away. The statistics will show you what's using resources, where the bottlenecks are, etc., etc. and enables you to build an accurate model of what's in use.

This can (for instance) indicate that you don't need more instances but you need more connections to a database, or that something else on the server is starving the broker of cycles, or any one of a number of things.

It's also important to see how usage changes under various loads, various times of day, that sort of thing.

This is a good thread to read regarding upping the # of additional instances and why it should be done with some consideration.
