we have an existing MQ cluster on linux servers and we have a requirement to add more qmgrs for some new apps. And these apps will need to communicate with some mainframe qmgrs outside our cluster.

How do we establish this connections to mainframe?
just create sdr-rcvr channel pairs to mainframe from the new qmgrs?
Or do we route all the connections via a single qmgr?

With the same network concepts as you would for a distributed server (firewalls and so forth) - speak to your mainframe people

There's no conceptual difference between a mainframe queue manager and a distributed one. So ask yourself if you'd create connections from each PR in the cluster to the new external queue manager if the new external queue manager was hosted on distributed, or if you'd use a gateway to act as a single point to route connections.

Then do that for this z/OS queue manager.
