I see a fair number of slides on presentations with white text on a black background...

And I've run into people who routinely use a dark background of some sort with light colored text.

I find this very hard to read, personally - there's just not enough contrast between the letters and the background.

I know that it comes from the days of green screens. But every modern desktop OS that I've used - I don't know about zOS specifically, but I'd be surprised if you couldn't - lets you use black text on a white background...

So which do you use, and why?

White background, black or dark blue text.

Corporate standard.

That's one of the first corporate standards I've heard of that actually makes sense...

It also has pretty edges and a logo in the corner, stuff like that. Not entirely sure why we need to be reminded who we work for.

The worst I ever had to endure was light blue on a darker blue background.
I fell asleep, well, I was resting my eyes.

My then manager hauled me over the coals for falling asleep.
I told him to get the slides and try to comprehend them without eye strain.
To his credit, he did and then agreed with me.

The next presentation we got from that presenter used black on white.

Powerpointitus Rulez ok!

It does rely on the presenter and if they actually know anything about presenting etc.

Sometimes a darker background with light font works better than black on white, othertimes it does not.

Sometimes an off white background can be worse than a dark one

Companies do spend a lot of money designing their letter heads and corporate identities so they will want too use them everywhere. However, this can turn out very wrong.

I gently corrected someone who had a webpage that had medium green text on a medium blue background...

For the record, I've never met a 3270 emulator that allowed this.

This may be that everyone old enough to be using a 3270 emulator is too much of a to change and look for such a feature.

I would also point out that z/OS isn't green text on a black background. Most ISPF panels exploit the full range of 8 colors to highlight important details in yellow or red.

I, too, prefer white background. Much easier to read. Nearly impossible to highlight on black background.

8 are the basic 3270 colors. Extended colors alliw for far more. IBM's PCOMM emulator allows user to change it all.

Hard copy of black background is a tiner-waster.

There appears to be an X-windows one that does...
https://www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs/user/ahlen/www/x3270/Docs/Resources.html

and

For example, to change the display from white-on-black to black-on-white, define the following resources:

wc3270.consoleColorForHostColorNeutralBlack: 15
wc3270.consoleColorForHostColorNeutralWhite: 0

I remember an emulator back in the 80s that wouldn't let you change the screen display, but took screenshots and print inverted exactly to save tiner as you describe.

(Ah, the good old days. Of course, they had to stop making it out of tin when the price went up. I don't think ton gives as rich a black....)

Do I sense disdain for the mainframe? It hasn't died, as predicted way back when.

Or, is z/OS just an easy target for humor - like basement-dwelling millennials?
