Anyone else seeing lots of them on the Forum? They seemed to have appeared over the weekend.
I'm seeing them on MacOs 12, OSX 11, iOS 10 and Linux (CentOS 6.5)
using Firefox or Safari.

For example, I see one just to the left of the two instances of the word "Font" just above the edit box where I'm typing this text.

Every time you reinvent the wheel the more square it gets (anon). If in doubt think and investigate before you ask silly questions.

Yep.

I'm assuming it's because of the richness of experience one gets here.

It's either the richness of experience one gets here, or a charset mismatch. The HTTPResponse header for the web page asserts that the content is "utf-8", when it's probably "iso-8859-1" or similar charset. From the Firefox -> Developer -> Network tool:

Code:
HTTP Response header:
...
Content-Type: "text/html; charset=UTF-8"
...

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">
<html dir="ltr">
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
...

The charset specified in the HTTP Response header takes precedence over the charset specified in the <meta> tag of the HTML document.

I wondered if it was a new brand of coffee they're trialing or something.

But yes, I see them.

And the experience here can be described in many ways; "rich" is not the first way to come to mind.

Go to your chrome menu, chose "more Tools -- Encoding --Western (Windows 1252) and everything is back in order...

However it is a discrepancy between content and declared encoding (ccsid)...

Well, I tried playing with firefox
:about:config
intl.fallbackCharsetList.ISO-8859-1
and that didn't seem to work.
I'm going to see if intl.charset.fallback.override works.

And, nope.

Well done that man!

But that does not explain why the same browser displayed everything correctly on Friday. Note that the browser has been running like the system for more than a week.

So given the discrepancy in the CCSID's in the data sent to us, why don't we follow our own advice?

How many times have we said in response to this problem ,
go back to the source and get it fixed.

something changed at the server over the weekend. We should not have to change our browsers. Besides, some browsers don't give you the flexibility like Firefox or Chrome.

And how many times have we pointed out that this is a voluntary board staffed by people with day jobs?

The authorities have been notified, but they have day jobs too. Patience is a virtue as well as an opera.

I'm going to see if intl.charset.fallback.override works.

"fallback" generally only works for web pages that don't declare a charset, not for those web pages that declare the wrong charset. (And this is normally set from Menu -> Options -> Content -> Fonts & Colors -> Advanced ... -> Text Encoding for Legacy Content -> Fallback Text Encoding .)

To temporarily reload a web page in Firefox with a Western charset ("windows-1252"?):
  • If "Text Encoding" does not appear in the Firefox menu, click Menu -> "Customize", drag "Text Encoding" onto the menu, and then click "Exit Customize".
  • Click Menu -> "Text Encoding" -> "Western".
However, that only seems to work for one web page at a time.
