Hi Experts - Need your view here, in my organization we have this project where we are setting a new set of MQ Servers with MQ 8.0 and I am suggesting them to go with Linux VM RHEL rather Windows VM, to be honest I am struggling to find why Linux is preferred over Windows as MQ Server, I say this because most of the Banks I have worked with till date have either Linux as their MQ Servers or Mainframe in some and Windows is just very less in percentage.

Any pointers on this would be helpful.

Thanks.

Linux is preferred over Windows for any server, not just MQ.

Just compare the 2 OS. On all aspects which include (but are not limited to):

    ease of administration
    ease of support
    performance
    scalability

Bottom line - MQ does not enter the equation when it comes to choice of OS. You'd be going through the same questioning process if you were installing Oracle Server.

The performance reports for MQ used to show how MQ performs better on Linux versus Windows, using the exact same hardware. Because both Windows and Linux can run on the exact same hardware, a direct comparison is possible, and Linux won. Now this is from years ago (MQ version 6), so not sure if they still do that kind of comparison, and whether Linux is still faster than Windows on the exact same hardware.

Linux is also free from a licensing stand point. Usually, cost plays a factor into your platform choice.

An important question, though, is where do users come from?

If they are in activedirectory, it *may* be easier to use windows boxes. Depends on how experienced your linux admins are with LDAP, and your MQ admins as well.

Thanks all for suggestions, looks like we are going with Windows as "the group preferred OS is Windows" - fair enough I think, and the point all most of the apps are on Windows as well, so they don't want to just separately use Linux for MQ.

Thanks all for your views again.
