I prefer the "Bob Chinn" way, which cooks it in a teriyaki sauce.
Much better than the Gollum way, which is "raw and wriggling". _________________ Working with MQ since 2010. |

this question asked in interview. |
So the intent of the question was to allow you to show what you knew, not what we knew?
Happy learning! |
@Jeff, are you planning to stop intimidating these guys anytime soon. Not that I want you to, because very often I tend to answer in the same vein as you do. But you have been so consistent in doing that for so many years, so thought I would ask. |
If he does, I'll pick up the torch. And burn people with it.
The forum exists primarily as a resource for technical specialists to ask technical questions of other specialists when they get stuck or need informed opinion. It's over the last few years it's mutated into a poor man's training resource and safety net for people who find the InfoCenter too intimidating or too much trouble.
That it's also mutated into a place where I can intimidate people without getting emails from HR is a side effect both I and the people I work with are happy about. The people condemned to work for me are ecstatic that I have another outlet..... _________________ Honesty is the best policy.

I had hoped that I was no longer being overtly intimidating. It's a difficulty with the written word. When I say "Happy learning!" I really do mean it in a very positive sense. It probably doesn't come out that way.
Likewise when I say that someone should read, think, try, repeat. I mean this as a positive mantra.
But at a certain point, the choice comes down to being somewhat intimidating or completely ignoring a question at all.
I really don't know which type of reply is more frustrating, or will lead someone to taking direct action sooner.
Do I plan to be less intimidating? Yes. And I had hoped I had. |

Crabs are not fish, they're crustaceans. So, I guess it's "... teach a man to crustate?" |
We are all getting crustier. |

Why would someone go to a job interview with knowledge limited to what some stranger on a post site wrote? |
A significant portion of what I know about MQ, WMB and DataPower I learned from reading what you strangers have written. |
But is our collective (yours/mine/OPs) time and effort better spent responding to very basic MQ questions? I'm thinking of the 'what does ReasonCode 2033 mean?' _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.

If the argument is its a waste of time to answer basic questions, then what kind of use of one time is it to tell someone they shouldn't have asked the question?
When are we going to get a "Beginner's Forum" here, where no question is too basic? _________________ Peter Potkay

I wanted to call back to this. It's very true of me as well. Particularly from people like F.J and Vennela.
But I think the takeaway is "read".
It's a much deeper forum these days - 12 years? - since I started reading, so there is a ton more to wade through.
But there are also consequently a large number of beginner questions and a reasonable number of answers to those questions.
Again, the question I have on a beginner's forum is - will anyone answer questions?

Too basic? Like 'what is IBM MQ?' 'What is error 2033?'
I'm not sure I see the need a 'beginners forum' here. I'm optimistic that most such questions are asked sincerely - no malice. Most of our replies are similarly, professionally, posted - again, no malice. The knowledge/skill level of the OP is usually clear from the question. Our usual back-and-forth with the OP further clarifies 'the issue' and the OPs skill-level.
I believe it is quite proper and professional for us to encourage the OP to do the basic research as part of our initial replies. _________________ I like deadlines. I like to wave as they pass by.
