yum (and packagekit) use rpm under the covers. yum manages the dependencies that the rpm's you might be installing for you. If the dependency a package is needed by your rpm is available in one of the configured repositories then it will grab that dependency from the repo and install it at the same time as the main package.

In the past, some IBM rpm's had dependecies on things like 'libXp'. Yes you could install the IBM rpm but it wouldn't work. Running the 'ldd' command would show unresolved links. yum helps eliminate this issue.

This is one area where I feel the IBM documentation could be updated although it would need separate bits for RedHat derrived distros (using yum) and say SLES that uses tools like 'yaST' for much the same reason that RH uses yum.
