I don't have personal experience with these products, but I have heard from others that contact admin's tools are technically superior to their competitor's tools, but they lack some of the business savvy of say Candle or MQSoftware. Take that for what it's worth...

contact admin resell their technology to other OEMs and also sell products directly. We have purchased MQControl as the easiest to use product for quick productivity gains in system management.

Some of the other products actually become part of the problem rather than the solution in their complexity and (lack of) ease of use...

I have used BMC,Candle and contact admin.
I beg to differ that contact admin is far superior.
I would put Candle as the best of the three products, but then, it is a matter of what you expect from a monitoring tool.

How exstensively have you used the BMC Patrol for MQ monitoring tools? Our tools provide a larger variety of mQ monitoring and administartion that far outway Candle. I have worked with both products.

If you want good MQSI coverage then BMC and Candle are the ones with this.

BMC is very extensible with your own code should you wish to (and may need to).

Candle tries to display every metric it can find but remains less intuitive to use.

I suggest you get a demo of both of these unless you already have a framework such as Tivoli in place.

The best way to check out the contact admin Products will be to get a copy from us and see for yourselves why our customers say that we have the best MQSeries solutions. Our product speaks for itself ( As they say, A good wine needs no push!! )

You can send an email to info@contact admin.com or call 800.375.6144 and someone from our Sales Team will make sure that you get a copy of our Software.

I didn't like BMC Patrol for MQAdmin very much. It was far too intrusive. For example, it crashed Queue Managers on several occasions. The software was not ready for MQ 5.2 even though I was told by their support folks that it was (lots of FDC errors). The upgrade required that ALL Queue Managers be shut down. The BMC Patrol for MQ Operator was more robust but was so convoluted that it became a huge implementation effort in the already difficult OS/390 and AIX/Solaris climate that existed. contact admin seemed like a better product overall due to it's heuristic architecture.

Hi Simon,

We were/are using Patrol for MQ Admin too, and had a similar experience. We were using it for proxy management of machines that don't have BMC Patrol available - by using the command server and the event queues. Anyway, nearly every day PMQA crashed the hosting queue manager - I suspect because it created hundreds of temporary dynamic files that never got cleaned up. We are still using it (just) until we get a better solution, but I recycle PMQA every day to keep it clean.

Yes, we were generating FDCs too. We sent LOADS of info to BMC about this problem, and were told: sorry we can't reproduce it. Obviously you had no trouble reproducing it!

Basically, it sucks . (Here's where I get sued). But it's true - it's cumbersome to use, constantly asking for confirmation for every single action, consumes too many resources, and can ONLY be used as a configuration tool - every time a channel stops due to inactivity, you have to click through manually to stop them all blinking. There doesn't seem to be anyway to turn it off.

We are using PMQO (BMC Patrol for MQ Operator), which is to be the enterprise management solution. It has it's faults but is usable once setup (correctly). We are using it on OS/390 via a proxy server, and that has been remarkably painless by and large.

P.S. I am told that PMQA is actually the contact admin product "badged" by BMC (and then enhanced, they tell me). I couldn't say how it compares with the original contact admin product.

Hi,

I want to share experiences too.
I use proxy management for my MQ OS/390 with patrol MQAdmin.
About once a day (perhaps when channels stop), the queue manager administration failed...
the queue manager seems to crash but not in fact...
it's very annoying me because some alerts are lost during this time.
I am with the BMC lab since 5 months but they don't succeed in reproducing the case....

I have tried many things, putting trace, ... but no progress

If someone has informations...??
Thanx
