hi all,
I am trying to understand the licensing scheme for WebSphere MQ Telemetry.
According to Announcement Letters and Infocenter, licencing is no clear.

Per : http://www-01.ibm.com/software/websphere/subscriptionandsupport/compare-mq-versions.html
Quote:
Licensing changes for WebSphere MQ Telemetry Client

Use of the WebSphere MQ Telemetry Client requires purchasing an entitlement for WebSphere MQ Telemetry Clients for each WebSphere MQ Server installed that will have WebSphere MQ Telemetry clients connected to it, with no limit to the number of clients connected; applicable to WebSphere MQ v7.5, WebSphere MQ v7.0.1 and WebSphere MQ v7.1.

Per http://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/cgi-bin/ssialias?subtype=ca&infotype=an&appname=iSource&supplier=877&letternum=ENUSZP10-0255
Quote:
Types of Telemetry Feature Client Device
The program offers the following types of Client Device. Each type of Client Device has corresponding licenses that entitle up to 100 of these devices to connect into WebSphere MQ networks.
- MQ Telemetry client
These clients are found in the MQ Install Directory\MQXR\SDK\clients directory structure. This client provides basic Telemetry connectivity. See the programdocumentation for more details.
- MQ Telemetry Advanced client
These clients are found in the MQ Install Directory\MQXR\SDK\advanced directory structure. This client provides more advanced Telemetry connectivity capabilities. See the programdocumentation for more details.

WebSphere MQ Telemetry Advanced 100 Client Devices E08V3LL

So telemetry functions is chargeable only if you use MQ Telemetry client or MQ Telemetry Advanced client from MQ Install Directory\MQXR\SDK\ ?

No charge for an Arduino MQTT client, an Eclipse Paho client, … ???

My understanding is that is server part of MQTT (the « WebSphere MQ Telemetry ») should be chargeable, but not the client, as there is so many open source clients available.

Any comments ?

TIA, LMD.

All licensing requests need to go to your IBM sales representative.

Remember as well that there are a number of recent changes in license terms for MQ for various compoenents. So where you see conflicting information, it may simply be that one piece of information is out of date.

That's a case of the old part numbers still being in the catalog. The new part number has a nominal charge for use of WMQ Telemetry, regardless of whose client is attached or how many clients attach. Use of the Advanced Telemetry component retains the tiered cost based on quantity of clients attached.

Note that the announcement states the new pricing applies not just to V7.5 but to prior versions as well. I suspect the old part number must be retained in the catalog as long as there are licensees using it, otherwise auditing entitlement or obtaining service would be difficult. so for your case, just find the right part number.

From what I heard at the UK user group - it's a nominal charge now (as opposed to free).
