Some of the WMQFTE documentation (possible the red book) recommends an MQFTE configuration using one queue manager as the coordination queue manager, and a separate one for the agent.

In our case we'll be using coordination - then agent for the command and agent.

(1) Could someone offer some additional details of the technical advances of this configuration?

(2) Has anyone out there used the separate queue manager configuration?

Thanks -

your question makes little to no sense.
You do not disclose the environment and what you intend to do with the product... nor the network or security considerations

That information will mandate your configuration

We have a mixture of ftp's using mq and some using ftp via protocol - volumes vary but expected to be significant. Will be using SSL - business as usual confidential data sent in some transfers.

It is difficult to define the entire environment - so perhaps the better question would be, under what situation would it make sense to use a separate queue manager for the coordination role, and one queue manager for the agent+command roles.

The response is: whenever it makes sense to use a qmgr to qmgr connection instead of a client connection. Now remember that the agent will likely make a client connection anyways, so this applies from the qmgr the client attaches to...

It's really a quality of service and quality of network decision...
