Seriously, there really are too few moderators to really make this work without introducing backlogs. I know jefflowrey never takes vacations (!) but the rest of us do.

What might work is to reverse the process - rather than move valid questions out of a parking area, remove invalid ones from their posted forum. I've already seen some posts quite legitimately saying "Mods please move to ..." - that could be expanded to "Mods please remove". Still a time burden but a lesser one, as it removes the need to actually read every post.

Would we need some process to control it? Say 3 people need to ask before the post is removed? Or moved to a "Junk" area? Or a group of QA posters who read & vote on the posts? Or what?

It's all a bit over-engineered, but might work. The alternative is "3 trouts and you're out", where you ask 3 trout-worthy questions in a row & lose the ability to post to the board.

But I'm just getting the hang of it!

Many people have told me to let go of the hate, the weary resignation and the cynicism. But it's so hard.....

.....especially when I worry how to properly support and encourage new posters on the board

That'll be me out for a duck very quickly then

I made the suggestion without being fully aware of the small number of Mods, hence the qualification of '...administratively or logistically unachievable'.

In order to be properly encouraging and nurturing, I will say that the proper conjugation here is "misanthrope", the singular noun form.

"Misanthropic" is the adjective form. So it's proper to say "Don't be misanthropic", or "Don't be a misanthrope".

I think we need (if implementing this rather draconian suggestion) to make a clear distinction between a question which could have been answered by reference to the manuals with a variable amount of effort, and a question so blindingly blinding it's trout worthy. Something which stands out as a dim question. Or a certification question.

We'd also need to allow the occassional "duh" question, as that moment when your brain either locks up or nips out for a coffee comes to us all sooner or later.

FWIW I don't recall you asking anything especially dim. Please try harder.

Exersise for the reader - cross reference the list of mods, with the list of active posters.

Were you my English master at school?

I knew it was "misanthrope" not "misanthropic", but felt it was picky to point out the difference, even if I'd been able to articulate it. Which I couldn't!

Gosh. An American who speaks English.

(reaches for anti-sarcasm pills, a paper bag for his head & a dictionary to look up "conjugation").

I recently had to provide documentation that my college degree, taken here in America, was actually taught in English.

That said... "exersise"?

In my defence: it was a 'doh' moment, one of those where you just see the solution a millisecond or two after pressing the button :oops

Exactly - I was educated in Essex. Hence I'm very defensive around people who can actually speak English

My point exactly - let he that is without "doh" swing the first trout.

A perfect example of what I mean:

There's no trout fodder here. On the face of it a really simple mistake, but those are the easiest to make because they're simple. We've all done it. Or anyone who hasn't will do soon enough. Many times.
