Where does IBM position DataPower primarily, as ana ESB or a security appliance?

What does your IBM sales representative say?

DataPower is a security appliance.

The ESB products that IBM offers are a) WebSphere ESB, b) WebSphere Message Broker.

This is a two-second question to answer on your own. And it's not clear why you would take our word for it.

In all the marketing material and conference presentations I have seen the Datapower box is classed as IBM's 3rd ESB offering.

You gotta read between the lines.
It does say 'Purpose built hardware' for simplified deployment and SECURITY.

You also have to ensure that you are paying for the features that you need.

After all, you wouldn't buy WebSphere Event Broker if you needed transformation, right?

True, but what is an does an ESB provide in concept.

Protocol Switching = tick
Message Transformation = tick
Message Routing = tick

I know of several instances of moving from ESB(product) and MB(product) to datapower for ESB(concept) provisioning.

Yes. it started life as an xml transformation engine in much the same way as the ESB product did, and yes it is a security device that can be placed in the DMZ but the X150 is most definiately a specialized ESB product and not just a security device.
