We currently have MQ 1.2 for OS/390 installed on our mainframe and we are planning to expand into distributed messaging. Initially we will be receiving messages (synchronous & asynchronous) from a NT box running websphere 4.0 and MQ Series 5.2 using JMS to interface with MQ.

Should we upgrade the mainframe version to MQSeries so that they are both in sync?
If so has anyone encountered any issues when doing this?

The versions are interoperable providing you use the common set of features.

Problems you might find are the UNICODE code page not being available on the mainframe until MQ 2.1. Send the messages as ASCII and all will be well.

I think it is worthwile to upgrade, because the newer version of MQ for OS390 has a lot more features

Do you mind expanding on the new features?
We looked at the benefits of clustering but because the OS/390 side will have messages processed by CICS transactions then according to the clustering manual this was not an option.
