Which version of MQ? 5.3 already has MSCS support, so MC74 isnt required / will cause problems

5.2 required MSCS support, but if the qmgr doesnt start post-hamvmqm then check the registry (HKLM\Software\IBM\MQSeries\Configuration\QueueManager\QMName\...) that the log path is where the S*.LOG files currently exist, and the prefix point to where the qmgr data files are. Look for FDC files as they may point to the why the qmgr wont start.

Make sure you stop the MQ Service before doing the hamvmqm utility, especially if you are doing a 5.2 install. At 5.3 there was a fix for this problem, not sure which fixpack it went into, but you can avoid the problem by ensuring anqmsrvn.exe is not running when you execute the hamvmqm utility (ie no MQ GUIs, taskbar icon or service running)
