My SYSTEM.CLUSTER.TRANSMIT.QUEUE has no messages on it, but is occupying over 3Gb of storage. I recently had to recyle the queue manager and at that point there was > 1,000,000 messages on the queue (remote systems were full).
Is there any sort of defined period in which the space allocation will be adjusted? Or, is there a way to manually force unused space to be returned to the filesystem? |

Are you saying 1,000,000 messages 'reappeared' following the restart, or they happened to be on the queue when the restart occurred.
I always thought queue space was reused when freed... |

| Upon restart there were ZERO messages on the xmit q, but the q file was occupying > 3Gb of storage. |

What release, fixpack, platform?
Did the queue manager end 'normally' (ie did it get the change to compress the queue)? |

Good point, no the queue manager was ended with the '-i' option.
In the meantime, the storage has now been returned... I need to verify if anyone else restarted the qmgr whilst I wasn't around or if the qmgr "unallocated" the storage itself. |

As I understand it the queue storage gets released when the queue is unloaded, which is after two checkpoints with no activity between them, or at normal qmgr shutdown. The rest of the time, it is probably sitting at its peak use, as the storgae does get recycled. Note this is from memory and may be both inaccurate and incomplete...  |
