Is it necessary to have a domain controller with authenticated users to exchanges messages between two MQSeries JMS Pub/Sub servers?

To start with, we run MQSeries with Publish Subscribe (JMS), and we have two boxes with MQSeries configured. One is considered a "destination" server and the other is a "publishing" server. The publishing server posts messages to a LOCAL topic, which is then picked up by a routing process elsewhere and then published to a topic on the destination server. This is emulating the existing environment into which our product will eventually be implemented (The idea is to have routing rules centrally located, as is my understanding).

Anyway, we had a demo setup on two Win2000 Pro boxes running on our in house network and everything worked fine. Our message router picked up the messages from the source and posted them to the destination with no problem. However, when we placed our software on two Win2000 Pro laptops which were to be taken for a demo (hence disconnected from the network) we ran into problems. I believe they are security issues, as once the boxes ran on their own they had no domain controller to authenticate uses. We were forced to take a 3rd laptop, install Win 2000 Server with domain controlling, create our own domain with users, and bring our own mini network with us (cost us about 6 hours).

My question is, is it possibly to have a workgroup or other network with only two Win 2000 Pro computers connected via a hub and to be able to pass messages topic to topic as described?
